Exhibit Overview

Let’s Get to Work! highlights the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education as children role-play in a pretend manufacturing environment and construction site, complete with a kid-sized TONKA^® work truck. A variety of building and puzzle activities, fun props and costumes add to the experience as children learn about what makes a community work.

Pretend Products, Inc. encourages children to create a product in a mini manufacturing company. A large background mural sets the scene for cooperative play. Children can pretend to be the plant manager, a line worker, or shipping supervisor as they sort, match, assemble and pack a variety of safety signs -- learning the importance of performing tasks in a sequence to produce a quality product. A conveyor system brings their package to the shipping area where an interactive map allows workers to choose the mode of transportation to proudly send their finished products around the corner – or around the world.

What kid doesn’t dream of driving a kid-sized TONKA Work Truck? A quick beep of the horn clears the way when kids climb into the cab of this one-of-a-kind exhibit. An optional GPS device on the dashboard helps guide visitors to pretend local businesses, check voice and text messages and access important information about the fuel used in their truck. Outside the truck, kids learn valuable math and science skills as they use a generator to power up work lights, sort tools, recognize the shapes of different packages and calculate the cost of purchasing their building supplies.

In Under Construction – Go Green!, kids can grab a hard hat and work together as architects, engineers, contractors and project managers to build a pretend ecology center. Eco-friendly roofing, siding and paving materials, along with tools of the trade are used to finish the ecology center’s exterior. Children can take stop at the architect’s desk to review the building plans, and then try their hands at interior work as they install pipes, flooring, insulation and electrical conduit. Work-order clipboards help keep kids on task, reinforce green messages and highlight the importance of cleaning up the worksite!
